Q: Ask Lauren Fleshman #1 on The Running On Om Podcast
This past week, the first Ask Lauren Fleshman podcast episode was released on The Running On Om Podcast. To learn more about why I choose to move to an audio format, read here. The podcast version of Ask Lauren Fleshman is a monthly series on Running On Om, where I answer listeners questions on all things that pop up when living an athletic life— motivation, injuries, relationship issues, nutrition, body image, you name it.
In this episode, I answer listeners questions on the following topics:
- The value of whether chasing one’s dreams is worth it and how one can reignite their dreams when the spark is gone.
- What is more important in a running coach— someone who has excellent reliability or a coach who has extensive expertise?
- How does one get up the guts to travel out of state for a surgery that may or may not fix one’s injury?
- Are we as spectators feeding the use of performance enhancing drugs with our emphasis on greatness?
- How to increase one’s mental strength in training and racing so that one can reach their potential?
- What made me realize running was a part of who I am?

Rest/recovery is one of the toughest things for me. As a professional runner, i’m sure it’s really difficult for you too. Darn competitive spirit! How do you rest after a hard race? Mentally? Physically? How do you make room for a period of true rest (no activity) – is it even necessary?
Digging even further, how do you recover with a KID or KIDS!? I am not a professional runner but I do run ultras (trails) and have two kids under the age of 7 and a husband who cycles and mountain bikes. Often times, when I get home from a tough 26 miles on the trails, he darts out for a ride so I am left to not only make my own lunch and recovery meal (and um, shower if I am lucky) I have to make theirs sometimes as well (depending on the day and weather). Like most things in life, it is a balance. I never want my family to feel second when it comes to my running so I (personally) try to incorporate as best I can. Yoga with the kids is a really nice way of stretching. Sometimes, I will throw in a DVD if the weather is poor and I am truly struggling (hey, I am human) but I find the less often I do that, the better I feel all around, as do they. My physical recovery is more active but not in the way most think. Walks to the park. The occasional ride down the slide with my little etc. Mentally? I save that for evening, when the kids are in bed. They deserve a 100% focused mother so try to not dissect my run, my body, my current situation until they are asleep – that could work for non-mother runners as well. Letting your mind focus on other things (knitting, cooking, shopping on Oiselle.com) until you have quiet time to focus. Sorry, I know this was meant for Lauren to answer. Hopefully, she will have some great words of wisdom for you. Keep running!
